Summary

The UW College of the Environment was formed in 2009 to offer an integrated constellation of scientific research, education and real-world experience through UW’s extensive presence in Earth Sciences, Forestry, Oceanography, Climate and related fields. Areas of study span from “the forests to the seas, from the depths of the earth to the edge of the solar system.” The College offers both graduate and undergraduate programs, and many students work on interdisciplinary teams and/or collaborate with other Pacific Northwest organizations to address needed environmental research and applications.

Programs

The College’s 200 faculty members have earned an impressive array of honors, fellowships and awards. Four-year degree programs are offered in the following nine core schools and units: Aquatic and Fishery Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, Earth and Space, the Environment, Forest Resources, Marine Affairs, Oceanography, Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere, and WA NASA Space Grant Consortium, as well as two new units (as of July 2010), Friday Harbor Laboratories and WA Sea Grant Program. Additional programs include a Continuing Education, Certificate in Environment and Sustainability within an online format.

Location

Founded in 1861, University of Washington has a large, beautiful campus in metropolitan Seattle overlooking Lake Washington. The waterways, forests and mountains of the Pacific Northwest are “labs” for collaborative programs with industry, non-profit and government organizations.

Enrollment

The UW is a large state university and world-class research institution with extensive graduate and undergraduate programs. The Seattle campus serves about 40,000 students, with a significant international population. The College of the Environment enrolls about 1,400 graduate and undergraduate students.

Cost

Undergraduate tuition is about $8,700 for WA state residents, $25,300 for non-residents. Graduate tuition is about $11,400 for residents and $24,800 for non-residents. A full array of financial aid is available, from grants and loans to scholarship and work-study opportunities.

Accreditation

The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, and is a member of the Association of American Universities.

Student and alum life

The College’s high-level graduate research programs offer a wide-range of opportunities to combine rigorous academics with real world experiences for students with a passion for sustainability. Campus life features an array of extracurricular activities and social outlets. The size of the University may make it daunting for some to create connections, but for those with initiative, opportunities abound.
